This project aims to explore the dockland’s hidden history in Rotherhithe. It mainly focuses on the representativeness of the economic activity and the resident’s life. Rotherhithe, the South East London, was the old commercial dock area from 17C. One old picture of the cafe I often visit inspired me to explore Rotherhithe. The café was called Watch House cafe. It was used as the watch house to observe to prevent body snatchers from digging a grave. Before knowing the fact, the café was just a unique building café for me. However, the place attracted me more when I saw one archive of pictures in the local library. This book was the output of my research and fieldwork from April to July 2013.

このプロジェクトは、南東ロンドンのロザハイスの港町としての遺産を探索し収めたものである。長い港町の歴史の中でも、17 世紀から1970年代まで栄えた港町の経済活動や住民の生活の名残に着目した。プロジェクトをはじめたきっかけは、ロザハイスにあるカフェを写した一枚の古い写真であった。何も知らずにコーヒーを飲んでいたそのカフェは、1811年頃多発した墓荒しから墓地を守るために自警団が詰めていた監視小屋であった。当時、港町で働く貧しい人々が医学解剖用に墓から死体を盗んで売っていたという。その事実に驚くとともに、この地域の歴史を調べはじめた。カフェにとどまらず、この地域には、歩き調べるごとに１９世紀のロンドンを彷彿させる興味深い発見がたくさんある。
